Scientists studied how sleep affected hydration levels of over 2,000 adults in the U.S. and China. Asher Yoel Rosinger, lead researcher, explained to Sleepopolis that we wanted to investigate this question in two different cultures. These cultures may have different dietary or health habits that impact sleep and water intake patterns.

Participants were asked questions regarding their sleep habits, and urine samples were taken to analyze for biomarkers. The results showed thatAdults who reported sleeping for six hours or more had more concentrated urine and were 59% more likely to become dehydrated than those who slept for eight hours.This is believed to be due to vasopressin, a hormone that scientists believe causes this effect.

Rosinger says that previous research has shown that the hormone is released according to a circadian rhythm. This allows for dehydration prevention and helps prevent it from happening. We speculated that if someone is sleeping less, they might not be receiving the same protections from the hormone throughout the day.
