Silentnight, a mattress company claims that it has transformed over 105 million plastic bottles to make mattresses in its eco-friendly new bed collection.
Although the brand is based in the UK, it has been around for many decades. However, it recently found a new purpose as a center for sustainable innovation. Silentnight was the first bed company to receive accreditation under theFurniture Industries Sustainability Program. It also won numerous environmental awards and has launched the Eco Comfort line of beds made from recycled plastic.
It works this way:The brand takes plastic bottles from the ocean and breaks them down to make fibers.. Although it might not seem like much at the micro-level, consider the macro implications when you add all the plastic bottles from around the world.That’s nearly 17 million barrels per year of oil. These resources will be used to create a product that can only be used once.But that will endure for centuriesMore often than not, they end up as litter in our oceans.
What can we do to reduce our plastic consumption? Jandali pointed out that Silentnight and other green initiatives can help society reduce its plastic consumption. They also divert waste streams and increase demand for recycled products that would otherwise go to landfills.
He concluded that design plays a significant role in the universe. Designers have an obligation to consider the entire life cycle of products when they are focusing on climate change.
