A German study has revealed that having an internet connection fast could result in a decrease in the quantity and quality of one’s sleep.

Researchers were particularly interested in how certain bedtime habits that use high-speed DSL (e.g. scrolling on smartphones, playing video games and watching movies) could affect sleep duration. They used survey data from 2008 to 2012 to analyze the data and asked participants questions about their electronic device use before bed.

They found that people with high-speed internet slept 25 minutes longer than those who didn’t have it. They were also less likely to get the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night, and they reported lower quality sleep.

The most surprising result was that smartphone use and sleep duration were more common among those aged between 30 and 59 than in the younger age group. This is according to Luca Stella who shared his findings with me via email. These individuals may have more work-related and family obligations in the morning, and therefore may not be able compensate for a late bedtime.
